Starting lessons
Before you can begin Practical Driving Lessons, you must have a Provisional Driving Licence. You need to bring it with you on your first lesson. You will also need your Provisional Licence before you can apply for your Theory Test. You can apply for your first Provisional Licence HERE.
If you haven't done so already, it would also be a good idea to start revising for your Theory Test at the same time that you start your Practical lessons. There are a number of good resources including phone apps that I can recommend.

I am based near Cockermouth and mainly cover the Allerdale area, specifically Workington, Cockermouth and surrounding villages. I can meet you anywhere that's convenient whether that's at home, school, college or work.
The Driving Test Centre that I use is at Workington and so most of our lessons will be focused in and around Workington. We will be driving on a variety of different types of roads including town centre, residential areas, 'A' roads, rural roads and Dual Carriageways. Your First Lesson |
Learning to drive is an exciting thought for most people, but many people are pretty nervous about getting in the car for the first time. On your first lesson, we'll start off somewhere quiet and spend some time learning about the car and it's many controls, but I always like to make sure that you have the chance to get the car moving on the first lesson. We can then start to work through the Training Syllabus, at your pace, to get you safely and confidently on the road.
How long will it take?
Unfortunately, that's not an easy question to answer. Everyone is different and the worst thing you can do is compare yourself to your friends, family or anyone else. We all have that one friend who swears that he passed first time after just 5 lessons! In reality, DVSA research suggests that, on average, it takes 45 hours of lessons with an Instructor plus an additional 22 hours of practice with family or friends to become skilled enough to pass your test. Some will take more, but many will take less. Once we've had a few lessons, we'll have a much better idea of how long it will take you, but remember that things change and consistency is important. If you can have practice outside of lessons with family or friend, great! But if you can't, don't worry. Plenty of people get through without that.
